Happy Tuesday!

Hello, hello!
I hope you all had an amazing weekend full of beautiful sunshine. I sure enjoyed mine. As soon as school broke out on Friday, I headed down to Victoria for the evening to spend some time with my family.

We sure had another fun week in school. Please scroll down to read about all that we did. Please remember to get with me if you have any Valentine cards that will be coming to us from out of state. I will be sending out an email to my contacts this weekend. I haven't heard from some of you that got us lots last year, so please let me know soon if you plan to. Even if you do not know for sure, let me know what you are thinking! Thanks!

We have EARLY RELEASE on Wednesday, don't forget! The kids will be dismissed at 12:30. We will also be eating lunch in the room, so if your child does not bring their lunch they will be eating a sack lunch from the cafeterial.

Also, on a Valentine's note...please send in your $3.00 when you get a chance. I know it is still a few weeks off, but it will be hear before we know it!

That's it for now! Have a wonderful week,
Miss Urban

Cabin Fever!

Happy Friday!

Goodness, Winter has arrived! I woke up this morning feeling like I was back in New Mexico! We didn't have a whole lot of nice weather to play in outside, but we made up for it in our amazing new Science Lab. Be sure to ask the kids about all the fun things we learned about.
The Math benchmark went well and we are looking foward to having Monday off for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. DON'T COME TO SCHOOL :) Also, coming up on January 30, we will have a half day of school. This is built in our calendar so that teachers can meet with the parents and confer on the student's progress. It is normally only for parents of students who are struggling in one or more areas, so I will be contacting you to set up a time to come in. However; I would love to share the progress of every child and am willing to meet whenever. Please email me and let me know if you are interested. I will have from 1:00-5:00pm open that day, and can meet any other day T-F from 4:00-5:00. I also have my conference time daily (2:15-3:00) Thanks!

I have made new sections in the lower half of my blog to let you know what we learned in each subject area this week. There are also a few new additions on the side bar! Please scroll down to read up on us!

Before I close, please make attention to the note below referring to the Gifted and Talented Program. Diana Flores requested we post it in our newsletters.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Miss Urban

Goodbye 2007, Hello 2008!

Howdy!

Well, we sure have had fun kicking off the new year here in Letter Land! It has actually been a rather relaxing and laid-back week. We still have one week left in the second nine week grading period and a couple more assessments, so we didn't start a new unit of study as far as Science or Social Studies goes. We did however, review quite a bit for our upcoming Math Benchmark and this weeks Reading Benchmark. We also focused on New Years and set some resolutions for the classroom. We have a new reward system for "Star Character" traits. Students will earn stickers for extraordinary acts of kindness and honorable character. Once five stickers are collected, the children visit the treasure box. Once 20 are collected, they get to eat lunch with Miss Urban!

We did do A LOT of reading too to prepare for the benchmark. I am SOOO happy to report that our WHOLE CLASS passed the reading assessment with flying colors! I am ecstatic about our score!! WAY TO GO KIDS! Parents thanks so much for helping prepare your children. They did Awesome.
We started a new unit for writing that is called 6+ Writing Traits. The students are learning 6 traits of good writing: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. I introduced to them last year, so they have a little background already, but now they will understand it much more as it helps strengthen their writing. We also got two new digraphs for our Phonics Dance: 'aw' and 'au'.
Now, with the exception of the Math benchmark next Tuesday, we are finished with assessments for now, woohoo! Starting on Monday, we are back to our normal schedule and will have some really neat things to learn. We will dig deeper into our reading and the most exciting new yet...we get to start using our brand new SCIENCE LAB! That's right, starting Monday we will be in the Science lab for two weeks learning all sorts of fun things about Earth. We will learning about the Earth from the inside-out. The kids are excited!

We also had a surprise visit from Jerheme on Thursday. He and Emily were on their way to Austin and thought they would stop in and say hello. He brought us treats, read us books, and showed us how important it is to get ready for work (his work) and showed us his stretches! It was quite entertaining! Scroll down to see the neat picture show.

That's it for now, have a wonderful weekend!!!
Love, Miss Urban
