Spirit of Giving

Hello!
Well, we are 3.5 days away from Christmas break! Goodness, where did the semester go? We have been so busy learning all about Christmas traditions around the world and what the true meaning of this season really is. We loved spending time writing cards and making gifts to our friends at Vista Village. Saturday's visit was a incredible. We got to sing, read books, eat yummy treats, and most importantly, make new friends. Miss Urban is so thankful for all who were able to make it. It was clear that we had made their day!

We hope you enjoy our pictures of us writing as well. Everyday we get to write amazing stories and Miss Urban is very proud of us! We love to turn the lights off, sit by the lamps, listen to quiet music and simply write away. We all have our own special writing spots so that we can get our stories down on paper without any distractions! Be sure to stop by our hall sometime and check out our stories.

Check out our cool photos and video!!! We have been having fun in the Science lab learning all about our Five Senses and how to take care of our bodies. We also had our first family night where we got to show our families all of the amazing art projects we did during our Color Unit. We had a blast! Thanks so all the families that came!! (Our video is a big shaky because Miss Urban had it sitting on our wobbly table!)

Hello!

We've posted a couple of new picture shows. We had a BLAST on Community Helper day and loved learning about all of the different types of jobs there are. We got great pictures of most of them, but not all. Thanks for all of you who helped make this possible. Miss Urban also made us pose real pretty on picture day. Don't we look great!?!

We hope you enjoy!

17 1/2 Days To Go!

Hello!
Boy, have we been busy! It has been so wonderful to see all of you families in the last few weeks. Thanks so much for making it out to all of the fun events we've had. The children have LOVED getting to show you all that they've learned, and it warms my heart to see how dedicated you are to their success. I know it has been a lot, but thank you for taking the time to make it all happen. I'm just trying to add some fun and adventure to these stressful weeks of review and testing!

Please be reviewing your students math skills throughout the week. We will start our Math Benchmark on Thursday. It's a big one, so we have been working hard in here. You will see their work coming home and can review from that. Look at the problems they are having trouble with and help them try to understand their mistakes. I am sure you have noticed and been told that I have stopped the homework. They have had so much pressure lately that I wanted to take a little of it off; however, I will be sending a few things here and there just to refresh their minds. There will be several things on the benchmark that we learned early on, so the work will be a good refresher.

That is it for now. I hope all of the research projects are coming along nicely. Please let me know if you need any help at all. I can help get materials or information if you need help. Also, I wanted to offer any posters or visuals that we used in the classroom for their displays. We have an awesome Ziggurat in here, tons of cool, laminated pictures, etc. Just let me know! I am so excited to see everyone!

Happy Tuesday!

Apologies!!!

Goodness,
I am so sorry that I haven't had a post in an entire month!!! I can't believe the time has gone by so fast. I know we had one week off, but we've still done tons and I need to catch you all up!
Ms. Slovak, our student teacher from Texas State, has been busy doing her lead teaching. We are so happy to have had her with us this entire semester and now it is her turn to take over! She is teaching us some fun things in Math and Social Studies/History. Please scroll all the way to the bottom to read up on what we're learning!
I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break and have had great Aprils so far. The time is going to continue to fly past us, so get ready! We have LOTS of fun things coming up both inside and outside the classroom. Please pay close attention to the calendar on the right side of the blog.
I have posted many pictures, so take some time to enjoy them all. I'm so sorry that there is so much at one time...grab some popcorn :) ! I promise to get back on my bi-weekly schedule. I look forward to seeing you all at the carnival next Friday.
Love,
Miss Urban

One week until Spring Break!

Hello Letter Land!
I hope everyone was able to keep warm today as our crazy weather threw us all off. I am truly sorry to have canceled our Math Madness. The kids were so excited to show all of you how much fun we have with math each day. I really want to reschedule it soon, so hopefully many of you can still make it out. I understand if it won't work, but we'll try!

We've had tons of fun the last couple of weeks. We are finishing up our Ancient History unit on Mesoamerica and have enjoyed learning about the Maya, Aztec and Inca civilization. We also had a special guest visit from Connor Jones' grandfather. He is a pathologist and was so kind to bring some human organs to show us. We learned all about human hearts and lungs. We saw what can happen when people don't take care of their health and their organs fail them. It was a wonderful treat and we are so grateful to have had this experience. Check out our pictures below and the poll on favorite civilizations (to right of page)!

We have also been working really hard in Math and Reading to prepare for our benchmarks next week. Please make sure all the kids are getting enough rest and well-balanced meals. Both assessments are going to take a good deal of time, so the kids need to be ready!

I look forward to seeing many of you on Kite day next Friday. A huge thanks to the Jones' family for providing a great idea with the homemade kites! It will be tons of fun. Remember, everyone is welcome to come. We will start the whole process at 12:30 and begin flying at 2:15.

That is it for now. However, I don't think I have told you lately how much I love your children! They bring smiles to my face all day, everyday (even when they tell you I wasn't smiling... :). They are amazing children and I cherish every moment with them. Thanks for being wonderful parents and allowing me into your lives.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Love, Miss Urban

Letter Land Story Hour

100's Day, Go Get It, Letter Land Story Hour, and Valentines!

Happy Friday Letter Land Familes!
WHOA! We have been so busy the last few weeks. I apologize for not keeping you up to date! We have had lots of fun events at school. We had our 100th day of school last Monday. We did all sorts of fun things with the number 100. We then had our very own Jerheme Urban come and talk to the entire school about how important it is to work hard in school and go to college. It was "Go Get It" week and so he came to encourage us to keep going until we reached the top! This week we showed off what great readers we have become. We dressed up in character and read to our friends and familes. Miss Urban was soo impressed and so was Mrs. Cary who stopped by for a little bit. It was a great night! We ended the week celebrating a very fun Valentine's Day. Our friends from Vista Village came to help us decorate cookies, paint faces, read stories and make valentines. We had a blast! Please scroll down and look at all of the different slide shows! They are really fun!

Happy Tuesday!

Hello, hello!
I hope you all had an amazing weekend full of beautiful sunshine. I sure enjoyed mine. As soon as school broke out on Friday, I headed down to Victoria for the evening to spend some time with my family.

We sure had another fun week in school. Please scroll down to read about all that we did. Please remember to get with me if you have any Valentine cards that will be coming to us from out of state. I will be sending out an email to my contacts this weekend. I haven't heard from some of you that got us lots last year, so please let me know soon if you plan to. Even if you do not know for sure, let me know what you are thinking! Thanks!

We have EARLY RELEASE on Wednesday, don't forget! The kids will be dismissed at 12:30. We will also be eating lunch in the room, so if your child does not bring their lunch they will be eating a sack lunch from the cafeterial.

Also, on a Valentine's note...please send in your $3.00 when you get a chance. I know it is still a few weeks off, but it will be hear before we know it!

That's it for now! Have a wonderful week,
Miss Urban

Cabin Fever!

Happy Friday!

Goodness, Winter has arrived! I woke up this morning feeling like I was back in New Mexico! We didn't have a whole lot of nice weather to play in outside, but we made up for it in our amazing new Science Lab. Be sure to ask the kids about all the fun things we learned about.
The Math benchmark went well and we are looking foward to having Monday off for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. DON'T COME TO SCHOOL :) Also, coming up on January 30, we will have a half day of school. This is built in our calendar so that teachers can meet with the parents and confer on the student's progress. It is normally only for parents of students who are struggling in one or more areas, so I will be contacting you to set up a time to come in. However; I would love to share the progress of every child and am willing to meet whenever. Please email me and let me know if you are interested. I will have from 1:00-5:00pm open that day, and can meet any other day T-F from 4:00-5:00. I also have my conference time daily (2:15-3:00) Thanks!

I have made new sections in the lower half of my blog to let you know what we learned in each subject area this week. There are also a few new additions on the side bar! Please scroll down to read up on us!

Before I close, please make attention to the note below referring to the Gifted and Talented Program. Diana Flores requested we post it in our newsletters.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Miss Urban

Goodbye 2007, Hello 2008!

Howdy!

Well, we sure have had fun kicking off the new year here in Letter Land! It has actually been a rather relaxing and laid-back week. We still have one week left in the second nine week grading period and a couple more assessments, so we didn't start a new unit of study as far as Science or Social Studies goes. We did however, review quite a bit for our upcoming Math Benchmark and this weeks Reading Benchmark. We also focused on New Years and set some resolutions for the classroom. We have a new reward system for "Star Character" traits. Students will earn stickers for extraordinary acts of kindness and honorable character. Once five stickers are collected, the children visit the treasure box. Once 20 are collected, they get to eat lunch with Miss Urban!

We did do A LOT of reading too to prepare for the benchmark. I am SOOO happy to report that our WHOLE CLASS passed the reading assessment with flying colors! I am ecstatic about our score!! WAY TO GO KIDS! Parents thanks so much for helping prepare your children. They did Awesome.
We started a new unit for writing that is called 6+ Writing Traits. The students are learning 6 traits of good writing: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. I introduced to them last year, so they have a little background already, but now they will understand it much more as it helps strengthen their writing. We also got two new digraphs for our Phonics Dance: 'aw' and 'au'.
Now, with the exception of the Math benchmark next Tuesday, we are finished with assessments for now, woohoo! Starting on Monday, we are back to our normal schedule and will have some really neat things to learn. We will dig deeper into our reading and the most exciting new yet...we get to start using our brand new SCIENCE LAB! That's right, starting Monday we will be in the Science lab for two weeks learning all sorts of fun things about Earth. We will learning about the Earth from the inside-out. The kids are excited!

We also had a surprise visit from Jerheme on Thursday. He and Emily were on their way to Austin and thought they would stop in and say hello. He brought us treats, read us books, and showed us how important it is to get ready for work (his work) and showed us his stretches! It was quite entertaining! Scroll down to see the neat picture show.

That's it for now, have a wonderful weekend!!!
Love, Miss Urban
